Media texts combine several forms of “languages” or forms of communication–visual images (pictures or films), audio (sound, music or speech) and written language. Media education teaches to interpret these different languages and also other symbolic systems of images and sounds. Today, “media literacy” is considered a form of literacy, it involves “reading” and “writing” media and is as important for young people as the more traditional literacy of print. The Center for Media Literacy has developed a series of five key concepts for media literacy education, and five key questions that correspond to each of these concepts.
